Landslides In Practice

Landslides In Practice

The authoritative guide to landslide investigation, evaluation, and mitigation design Landslides in Practice combines clearly written descriptions and real-life case histories in an authoritative, practical guide to landslide investigation, evaluation, and mitigation design. It presents state-of-the-art investigative techniques and practical information on proven remediation techniques and technologies, including handy checklists for undertaking an initial field examination of a landslide. Landslides in Practice describes the technical tools needed to study landslides—site investigations, soil shear strength properties, and slope stability analyses—and details forty-five methods for stabilizing landslides or preventing instability in soils from occurring. Most remediation techniques are keyed to the ENR Construction Cost Index to help readers determine a rough estimate of the costs associated with the various techniques. To-the-point summaries explain presented techniques without confusing jargon, and dozens of succinct case histories integrated throughout the book serve as useful examples. In addition, twelve expanded case histories illustrate in depth many aspects of the landslide events and remediation strategies covered. Complete with hundreds of informative illustrations, Landslides in Practice is a valuable resource for engineers, geologists, consulting firms, and construction companies, as well as landscape architects, land developers, and trial lawyers in the construction industry.

Landslides

Landslides

This volume is the second in the new Safety and Security Engineering series that is designed to provide a comprehensive view on risk mitigation. This volume is devoted to landslides and debris flow, addressing the need for a better understanding of these increasingly frequent phenomena. With better understanding comes a greater ability to manage the attendant risk. The present volume contains selected research papers presented at Wessex Institute of Technology Conferences. The book will be a valuable reference for professionals, scientists, and managers concerned with prediction and management of the risk of landslides and debris flows.

Introduction To The Physics Of Landslides

Introduction To The Physics Of Landslides

Landslides represent one of the most destructive natural catastrophes. They can reach extremely long distances and velocities, and are capable of wiping out human communities and settlements. Yet landslides have a creative facet as they contribute to the modification of the landscape. They are the consequence of the gravity pull jointly with the tectonic disturbance of our living planet. Landslides are most often studied within a geotechnical and geomorphological perspective. Engineering calculations are traditionally applied to the stability of terrains. In this book, landslides are viewed as a physical phenomenon. A physical understanding of landslides is a basis for modeling and mitigation and for understanding their flow behavior and dynamics. We still know relatively little about many aspects of landslide physics. It is only recently that the field of landslide dynamics is approaching a more mature stage. This is testified by the release of modelling tools for the simulation of landslides and debris flows. In this book the emphasis is placed on the problems at the frontier of landslide research. Each chapter is self-consistent, with questions and arguments introduced from the beginning.

Landslides

Landslides

This valuable three volume set of publications contains vital information from throughout the world on landslide and slope instability problems. Every four years the worlds leading scientists and engineers dealing with landslides, have the opportunity to meet up and engage in the exchange of ideas and experiences at a symposium run under the auspices of ISSMGE Technical Committee 11. These volumes, taken from the 8th symposium in the series, detail investigations into landslide causes, mechanisms and hazards, together with accounts of monitoring and mapping. Also covered is slope instability in response to rainfall and variations in groundwater. Sometimes human interference in the natural environment is the cause of slope instability. There are a number of papers on this aspect, especially relating landslide activity to dams and reservoirs. Descriptions of natural processes and landslide events are complemented by descriptions of methods of landslide stabilization with detailed case records of the performance of the works. These three volumes contain contributions from the world`s leading landslide authorities, providing invaluable information for anyone involved in this important field of engineering.
