A Maverick Life The Jack Kelly Story

A Maverick Life The Jack Kelly Story

Bio of 50s movie star & 50s - 70s TV actor, Jack Kelly, co-star of TV's "Maverick" In real life, Jack Kelly was a child performer, son of New York model, Nan Kelly, brother of actress, Nancy Kelly, brother-in-law of actor Edmond O'Brien and cinematographer Fred Jackman, Jr. On TV, from 1957 until 1962, he was James Garner's brother on the show, Maverick. Truth is, he was on the show longer than James Garner ... and women would often say he was the reason they kept coming back for more. In fact, they still say that, even though the show’s been in re-runs for decades, ever since it left the air. Oh yeah ... he was also a child star in the late 1930s, drove A Crooked Road with Mickey Rooney in 1954, went to Hell and Back with Audie Murphy in 1955, and took a trip to the Forbidden Planet in 1956 with Leslie Nielsen. In the late 1960s, he was on the cutting edge of Sale of The Century as the host, was able to Get Christie Love in 1975, and helped babysit the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew in 1977. Between the late 1950s and early 1970s, he played on virtually every episodic TV show that ever aired. All of this before he pseudo-retired from the small and large screen and served as a city councilman, and then the two-term mayor, of Huntington Beach, California. He was also a newspaper publisher. He loved some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, became a husband, and would probably tell everyone that his greatest joy was in being a father. Jack Kelly really LIVED.

I Am Mister Ed Allan Rocky Lane Revealed

I Am Mister Ed Allan Rocky Lane Revealed

Finalist for The Marfield Prize, aka The National Award for Arts Writing, from the Arts Club of Washington Allan Lane has been a mystery almost as long as he's been seen on a movie screen. His audiences have varied over many years. Some know him as the never officially recognized voice of TV's famous talking horse, Mister Ed. Some remember him as Red Ryder, the comic book Western hero-come-to-life at the Saturday afternoon matinee. Some remember him as Rocky Lane, yet another Western good guy, and a name that became synonymous with his own. Allan began working at the age of six. He later owned his own successful photography advertising agency. He started his love/hate relationship with acting at the age of sixteen in plays performed from city to city to ultimately make his way to Broadway. His movie career began in 1929 as leading man to Barbara Stanwyck, Loretta Young, and Joan Fontaine, among many. He appeared in many other television series, including Gunsmoke (1958-1961), Wagon Train (1958), and Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1958). Discover the full scope of the complicated life of Allan "Rocky" Lane. Illustrated. 318 pages. "I started reading about 2:00 this afternoon and finished a few minutes ago! Could not put it down! Warren Oates

Warren Oates

Though he never reached the lead actor status he labored so relentlessly to achieve, Warren Oates (1928–1982) is one of the most memorable and skilled character actors of the 1970s. With his rugged looks and measured demeanor, Oates crafted complex characters who were at once brazen and thoughtful, wild and subdued. Friends remember the hard-living, hard-drinking actor as kind and caring, but also sometimes as mean as a blue-eyed devil. Married four times, partial to road trips in his RV affectionately known as the "Roach Coach," and famous for performances for directors ranging from Sam Peckinpah to Steven Spielberg, Warren Oates remained a Hollywood outsider perfectly suited to the 1960s and 1970s counterculture. Born in the small town of Depoy in rural western Kentucky and reared in Louisville, Oates began his career in the late 1950s with bit parts in television westerns. Though hardly lucrative work, it was during this time Oates met renegade director Sam Peckinpah, establishing the creative relationship and destructive friendship that produced some of Oates's most unforgettable roles in Ride the High Country (1962), Major Dundee (1965), and The Wild Bunch (1969), as well as a leading part in Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). Though Oates maintained a close association with Peckinpah, he had a penchant for working with a variety of visionary directors who understood his approach and were eager to enlist the subtle talents of the consummate character actor. With supporting roles in In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Hired Hand (1971), Badlands (1973), 1941 (1979), and Stripes (1981), Oates delivered solid performances for filmmakers as diverse and talented as Norman Jewison, Peter Fonda, Terrence Malick, Steven Spielberg, and Ivan Reitman. Oates's offscreen personality was just as complex as his on-screen persona. Notorious for being a nightlife reveler, he was as sensitive and introspective as he was outgoing and prone to periods of exuberant, and at times illegal, excess. Though he never became a marquee name, Warren Oates continues to influence actors like Billy Bob Thornton and Benicio Del Toro, as well as directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Richard Linklater, all of whom have cited Oates as a major inspiration. In Warren Oates: A Wild Life, author Susan Compo skillfully captures the story of Oates's eventful life, indulgent lifestyle, and influential career.

The Lobotomist explores one of the darkest chapters of American medicine: the desperate attempt to treat the hundreds of thousands of psychiatric patients in need of help during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Into this crisis stepped Walter Freeman, M.D., who saw a solution in lobotomy, a brain operation intended to reduce the severity of psychotic symptoms. Although many patients did not benefit from the thousands of lobotomies Freeman performed, others believed their lobotomies changed them for the better.
